There's something extra special about a riverside wedding; the setting feels a little slower, the light is beautiful, and there's a sense of occasion without everything feeling too formal.
The Bingham Riverhouse in Richmond has all of that, wrapped up in a gorgeous Georgian townhouse overlooking the Thames.
It's a relaxed sort of setting where the day can unfold naturally, with drinks by the river, dinner alongside your favourite people, and then everyone gathering in the same room as the music starts to build.
And for us, that last bit is particularly important.
The Bingham Riverhouse is a Grade II listed building, full of Georgian character, but it doesn't feel like a grand country house where you're afraid to touch anything.
There's also an interesting literary connection here, too. At the turn of the 20th century, the house was home to Katherine Bradley and Edith Cooper, who wrote poetry together under the name Michael Field. They welcomed literary figures including John Ruskin and W.B. Yeats, making the house something of a creative meeting place.
Today, that history sits alongside the hotel's more contemporary boutique feel, with its 15 individually named bedrooms, private garden and terrace, and the Thames flowing just beyond the doorstep.
For us, the best venues aren't simply beautiful to look at. They also make it easy for people to spend time together, and that's where the Bingham Riverhouse really comes into its own.
The room works brilliantly for bringing guests together and the bar is in the same space as the dancefloor. It might sound like a small thing, but it makes a difference, allowing people to grab another drink without disappearing into a different part of the building, so the party has a better chance of keeping its momentum.
There's flexibility with the sound setup, too. You can use the venue's in-house speakers or have your DJ bring their own equipment, depending on the event and what's needed.
And the team is really helpful, which makes the practical side of the day that much easier.
“The best parties happen when everyone feels a part of it; having the bar and dancefloor together really helps keep that energy in the room.” - Laura Harvey, Founder of SpinSisters.
You might want something relaxed and intimate, with music that sits gently alongside drinks and dinner before the dancing begins. Or perhaps you're planning a bigger celebration where the soundtrack gradually shifts gear and the dancefloor becomes the centre of the evening.
Either way, the music should feel like a natural part of the day, not something added at the end.
That's how we approach every wedding; we get to know the couple, understand the atmosphere they want to create, and build the soundtrack around the people in the room. Sometimes that means Disco and House; sometimes it's R&B favourites, Indie classics or a wonderfully unexpected run of tracks that gets everyone dancing.
The Bingham Riverhouse has another lovely advantage: guests can stay overnight, and couples can arrange exclusive use of the whole hotel. And that opens up all sorts of possibilities. Rather than everyone arriving for the ceremony and leaving a few hours later, you can create more of a shared experience, like time together before the wedding, a proper celebration in the evening, and a leisurely brunch the following morning.
With Richmond on the doorstep, the riverside setting and the surrounding area to explore, there's plenty to make a weekend of.
And when it's time to celebrate, you've got a beautiful space in which to bring everyone together.
Bingham Riverhouse weddings have plenty of natural charm, and it's a lovely choice for couples looking for something a little different from a traditional hotel ballroom. But for us, the important thing is what happens when the guests arrive, the drinks start flowing and the music brings everyone into the same moment.
